Do Chinese Passport Holders Need an NZeTA?
Chinese passport holders do not all follow the same travel-authorisation route when travelling to New Zealand. The correct arrangement depends on how the traveller plans to arrive, the purpose of the journey and whether a specific eligibility condition applies.
A person travelling from mainland China to New Zealand for an ordinary holiday is not automatically entitled to use an NZeTA simply because the visit is short. In many cases, a suitable visitor visa is required before departure.
However, some Chinese passport holders can use an NZeTA under particular arrangements, including eligible visits from Australia, qualifying airside transit at Auckland International Airport and certain cruise-ship journeys.
The first step is therefore to identify the actual journey. A short holiday, an airside connection and arrival aboard a cruise ship should never be treated as identical travel situations.
Visiting New Zealand from Australia
Chinese passport holders who meet the relevant Australia-to-New Zealand eligibility requirements may be able to visit New Zealand with an NZeTA rather than obtaining a visitor visa in advance.
The arrangement introduced in November 2025 remains available to eligible travellers until further notice, according to the October 2026 immigration update.
For travellers relying on an eligible Australian temporary visa, the flight to New Zealand must depart directly from Australia, and the qualifying Australian visa must be valid at the required point of travel. Not every Australian temporary visa qualifies.
An Australian permanent resident may fall under a different qualifying provision. Travellers should distinguish permanent residence from temporary visa status rather than assuming that all Australian residence or visa documents have the same effect.
A Chinese passport holder merely connecting through Australia should not assume that the transit stop creates eligibility for an NZeTA visitor journey.
Before preparing an application, confirm the exact Australian immigration status, the flight routing and the intended purpose of the New Zealand visit.
Can Chinese Citizens Visit Directly from China?
A direct flight from China to New Zealand does not, on its own, establish eligibility for an NZeTA visitor journey.
For example, a Chinese passport holder travelling from Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou or another city in mainland China for a conventional holiday may need a visitor visa unless another recognised eligibility basis applies.
This distinction matters because an NZeTA is not a universal replacement for a New Zealand visitor visa.
Travellers should identify their passport type, current immigration status and intended route before choosing an application category.
Transit Through Auckland International Airport
A Chinese passport holder travelling onward to another country may be eligible to transit through Auckland International Airport using an NZeTA, subject to the applicable conditions.
A qualifying transit journey takes place within the airport's permitted international transit area. The traveller does not pass through New Zealand immigration to enter the country.
Airside transit is generally limited to a maximum of 24 hours. Travellers must also check their onward flights, baggage arrangements and any requirements imposed by the airline or destination country.
If the journey involves collecting baggage outside the transit area, changing airports, staying overnight outside the permitted area or entering New Zealand, different immigration permission may be needed.
A transit NZeTA is not permission to leave the airport and explore Auckland during a connection.
Cruise Ship Travel for Chinese Passport Holders
Cruise passengers should pay special attention to how they first arrive in New Zealand.
A Chinese passport holder travelling to a New Zealand port aboard an eligible cruise ship may use the applicable NZeTA cruise-passenger arrangement.
However, someone planning to fly into New Zealand and then board a cruise ship has a different arrival pattern. A visitor visa may be required for that flight arrival.
For itineraries involving several ports, review the entire route rather than assuming that the final cruise destination determines the required permission.
Cruise passengers, airline visitors and transit passengers should select an application category that accurately represents their actual journey.

Documents to Prepare
Accurate identity information is important when preparing an NZeTA-related request.
For our application assistance service, every applicant should prepare:
- A valid passport that will be used for travel.
- A clear image or scan of the passport biodata page.
- A recent facial photograph showing the traveller clearly.
- A reliable email address and contact telephone number.
- Details of the planned travel purpose and relevant journey.
- Australian visa or permanent-residence information, where applicable.
Passport names, passport numbers and dates of birth should be entered carefully. The Latin-letter spelling must correspond with the traveller's actual passport.
A photograph should be clear, recent and unaltered. Avoid glare, obstructed facial features and photographs of printed photographs.
The passport biodata page should show the complete page, including the machine-readable lines.
Travel Planning for Chinese Families and Groups
Family members travelling together can have different eligibility conditions.
One person may have an eligible Australian visa, while another may hold a different immigration status. One member of a group might be travelling as a visitor while another is connecting onward as a transit passenger.
Each Chinese passport holder should therefore be assessed according to their own circumstances, even if everyone shares a flight reservation or cruise booking.
Check that all passport details are accurate and that the application category matches each person's actual travel purpose.
Our online application process supports multiple applicants within one application, with individual travel categories where applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Chinese passport holders apply for an NZeTA?
Some can. Eligibility depends on the journey and relevant circumstances, including qualifying travel from Australia, eligible Auckland airside transit and certain cruise arrivals. A Chinese passport alone does not establish ordinary visitor visa-waiver eligibility.
Can I fly directly from China to New Zealand with an NZeTA?
A direct tourist flight from mainland China does not automatically qualify for an NZeTA. A visitor visa may be needed unless another recognised eligibility condition applies.
I have an Australian visa. Can I visit New Zealand using an NZeTA?
Possibly, but not every Australian visa qualifies. The visa type, validity and travel route matter. Travellers using the eligible temporary-visa pathway must meet the direct-departure requirements.
Is a transit NZeTA available to Chinese passport holders?
Yes, qualifying Chinese passport holders may use the transit NZeTA arrangement for airside transit through Auckland International Airport, subject to the applicable conditions.
Can I leave Auckland Airport during an NZeTA transit connection?
Not on the basis of airside transit permission alone. Leaving the transit area and entering New Zealand can require different immigration permission.
Do Chinese cruise passengers need an NZeTA?
Eligible cruise passengers arriving in New Zealand by sea may qualify for the relevant NZeTA arrangement. Flying to New Zealand first to board a cruise can have different requirements.
Is the NZeTA the same as a New Zealand visitor visa?
No. An NZeTA is an electronic travel authorisation and does not itself guarantee entry permission or replace every visa requirement.
