UNDERSTANDING THE NZeTA
About the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA)
The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority, commonly known as the NZeTA, is an electronic travel authorisation used by eligible visitors and certain transit passengers travelling to New Zealand. Understanding how it works can help you prepare for your journey with confidence.

TRAVEL AUTHORISATION EXPLAINED
What Is the New Zealand NZeTA?
The NZeTA is an electronic travel authorisation associated with a traveller's passport. It is used by certain eligible people who can travel to New Zealand without obtaining a visitor visa before departure.
An NZeTA is not itself a visa. Eligible travellers may be granted the appropriate visitor visa and entry permission when they arrive in New Zealand, provided they meet the applicable immigration conditions.
Whether you need an NZeTA depends on your citizenship, passport, immigration status, reason for travel and method of arrival. Different arrangements can apply to visitors, cruise ship passengers and travellers transiting through New Zealand.
Passport-Linked
Your NZeTA information must match the passport you use for travel.
Multiple Journeys
A valid traveller NZeTA can generally be used for more than one qualifying journey.
Travel Conditions
An NZeTA does not replace the requirement to meet New Zealand's immigration and entry conditions.
NZeTA BACKGROUND
When Was the New Zealand NZeTA Introduced?
The NZeTA was introduced during 2019 and became a mandatory travel requirement for the relevant eligible travellers from 1 October 2019. It established an electronic travel-authorisation requirement for certain travellers who previously did not need to obtain a visa before departure.
The system helps New Zealand identify relevant traveller information before arrival and provides an additional step in the travel-permission process. Over time, the arrangements have continued to develop for different visitor, transit and travel categories.
Because eligibility arrangements can change, travellers should ensure that their passport and intended journey meet the requirements applicable at the time of travel.
PURPOSE OF TRAVEL AUTHORISATION
Why Do Eligible Travellers Need an NZeTA?
New Zealand uses electronic travel authorisation as part of its approach to managing international travel and determining which passengers may travel under eligible arrangements.
Traveller Information
The NZeTA request collects identity and passport information associated with the person travelling to New Zealand.
Eligibility Assessment
The authorisation process helps establish whether the traveller can use an applicable NZeTA travel arrangement.
Travel Preparation
Eligible travellers need to obtain the required travel authorisation before departure and ensure that their passport details are accurate.
Border Requirements
An NZeTA does not guarantee entry. Travellers must still satisfy the relevant immigration and border conditions when arriving in New Zealand.
NZeTA TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
Types of Travel That May Require an NZeTA
The requirements for an NZeTA depend on how and why you travel to New Zealand. Visitor, transit and cruise ship journeys can involve different eligibility conditions.
Visitor and Tourist Travel
Eligible visa-waiver travellers may need an NZeTA before flying to New Zealand for a holiday, sightseeing, visiting family or friends, or other qualifying short visits.
Transit Through New Zealand
Certain travellers transiting through Auckland International Airport may qualify for an NZeTA under the applicable transit arrangements. Transit authorisation does not automatically provide permission to enter New Zealand.
Cruise Ship Travel
Passengers arriving in New Zealand by cruise ship may qualify under specific arrival-by-sea arrangements. Travellers flying into New Zealand to board a cruise ship must consider the separate requirements for arriving by air.
Eligibility depends on the traveller's passport, immigration status and individual circumstances.
NZeTA VALIDITY
How Long Does an NZeTA Remain Valid?
A traveller NZeTA is generally valid for two years from its date of issue and may be used for multiple qualifying journeys while it remains valid.
The length of time a visitor is permitted to stay in New Zealand is separate from the validity of the NZeTA. Eligible visa-waiver visitors are generally granted permission for up to three months per visit, or up to six months for qualifying United Kingdom passport holders, subject to applicable conditions. Under the applicable visa-waiver visitor conditions, travellers must also observe the limit of no more than six months in New Zealand during any 12-month period.
If your passport is renewed or replaced, check whether your existing NZeTA information can be updated before requesting another authorisation.
INTERNATIONAL VISITOR LEVY
What Is the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL)?
The International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, commonly known as the IVL, is a levy paid by many international visitors to New Zealand. It helps support initiatives associated with tourism, conservation and the visitor experience.
Where the IVL applies, it is generally paid as part of the relevant NZeTA request or visa application process rather than through a separate payment after arrival. Whether a traveller must pay the IVL depends on the applicable travel and immigration arrangements.
Not every traveller is subject to the same IVL requirements. Certain travellers and travel categories may be exempt, so the amount and applicability should be confirmed according to the individual application.
